Oral Surgeon and Oral Surgery Services in Hugo
Dr. Brent Sorenson is both a general dentist and an oral surgeon. We provide oral surgery procedures such as extractions and dental implants on-site, sparing you the inconvenience of having to drive across town and juggle appointments with multiple practices.
Dr. Sorenson completed a fellowship in dental implants and loves to help patients recover functionality and confidence with these excellent restorations. The implant itself is a titanium post that is "implanted" into the jaw, where it is naturally integrated through stimulating new bone growth in the jaw. After a healing period, a crown is screwed onto the post to provide a stable biting and chewing surface. Implants offer very good treatment outcomes and longevity, and can last for the rest of your life if cared for properly.
Root Canal Therapy
If your tooth is suffering from a large crack, cavity, severe pain, or an abscess, Dr. Sorenson may recommend root canal therapy to save it. If the idea of a root canal makes you feel nervous, don’t let it! Numbing and sedation are available. Many patients are so comfortable during this procedure that they even fall asleep! Your comfort is always our priority. Once your procedure is completed, a dental crown will be placed to protect your tooth from further damage.
When periodontal disease has affected your mouth, your jawbone might have become too weak to support a dental implant you need. In cases like this, Dr. Sorenson will often recommend bone grafting (also known as natural bone regeneration) to promote healthy bone growth and thicken your jawbone. Over time your jawbone will naturally regenerate and become strong enough to support a dental implant.
When a tooth is too badly decayed to save, so Dr. Sorenson will perform an extraction. An extraction can also be needed if the tooth is severely fractured or is crowding other healthy teeth.
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Not all wisdom teeth need to be extracted but some do, due to limited space and difficulty keeping them clean. This sets them up for a higher risk of infection and decay, which can spread to healthy teeth next to them. In many situations, it’s best to pull the wisdom teeth before they jeopardize your smile as a whole.
At Sorenson Dental, we will take a panoramic radiograph of your entire jaw, so we can see the size, location, and developmental stage of the wisdom teeth in consideration. At the earliest, wisdom teeth are removed in the mid-teen years, but 3rd molars do not finish developing until closer to about 30 years of age.
